It may surprise many Alcestrians to know that we are not the only Alcester in the world!  Our namesake is in South Dakota, U.S.A. between Sioux City and Sioux Falls.

Alcester, S.D. was founded in 1879 by the Western Town Lot Company.  One hundred and thirty five acres of land was purchased from R.B. Harding and Mary Harding and this land was divided into lots for a town site and placed on the market for $50 a lot.

Today, Alcester, S.D. is a small community, with less than 1000 inhabitants, but it still boasts a school, post office, medical centre,shops and banks, as well as a golf course, swimming pool (outdoor!) and other leisure activities.
